BankWest: What is the Difference between a Level, a Grade and a Score?
Wednesday, 13 August 2008
The FSU office has recently received a number of queries about their Performance Scores and advice they have been given on how Performance Scores are assessed.
The confusion seems to be arising due to a misinterpretation of the use of Grades and Levels within BankWest and HBOSA.
Your Performance Score (as the name suggests) is the rating given to your performance against the balanced score card, your job description and the various targets or Key Performance Indicators which relate to your job.
Your Performance Score does not assess your performance in your Grade/Level compared to the Grade/Level of other jobs. For example, to achieve a Performance Score of ‘3’ you must “exceed” the expectations of your job (whatever Grade/Level that job may be) – you do not have to meet the expectations of an M1 or M2 Grade as some members have been advised. This is a misunderstanding.
Historically BankWest has used a system of grades – C1 – C4; A1 – A3; M1 – M5 and E. These Grades ‘sort’ jobs according to their level of know how required, accountability, problem solving etc.
When BankWest became part of HBOSA, they assigned all jobs within the group a Level. In other words the Levels were a way of grouping the various jobs and Grades into one uniform system of Levels within HBOSA.
This means that the old BankWest grades C1 – C4 are equivalent to Level 1 in the HBOSA system, A1 – A3 are equivalent to Level 2 etc. (The information on this is contained in HBuzz – Home – Your HBOSA – Careers – HBOS Levels).
A: So – the difference between a Level, a Grade and a Performance Score is:
- Level: is where your job fits in the HBOSA system of sorting jobs.
- Grade: is where your job fits in the BankWest system of sorting jobs. BankWest Grades fit within each HBOSA Level.
- Performance Score: is how you have been rated against your KPIs etc. in your job – no matter what Grade or Level it is.
Stop Press:
FSU is continuing to seek information from members in areas where this confusion has arisen especially in light of recent Performance Appraisals.
