ANZ Must Guarantee Jobs
Friday, 14 November 2008
The Finance Sector Union said the ANZ must come clean about the number of jobs under threat at the bank and give a guarantee to workers that their jobs are safe. The union said the bank is creating uncertainty for workers and customers.
Leon Carter, National Secretary Finance Sector Union said the bank had been talking about restructuring for some time, but failed to give any details to workers or the union.
“ANZ bank staff going into work today face an uncertain future. The bank must put an end to the smoke and mirrors talk of restructurings and give workers guarantees about their jobs. The bank is being cold hearted to start rumours of job cuts just six weeks before Christmas,” said Leon Carter.
The union warned that the restructuring could lead to massive off shoring of jobs to cut costs.
“If ANZ move to offshore jobs to low cost centres in India customers should have a right to know if their personal details are accessed offshore.
“The banks called on the Government to shore up the sector with the guarantee on all deposits but it will not guarantee workers jobs. It’s time the Government stepped in and placed conditions on the taxpayer funded guarantee to underpin the banking sector.
Australian workers are paying to bail out banks with their tax payer funded guarantees, while the banks cut their jobs,” said Leon Carter.
