Bushfire Smoke and
Workplace Health and Safety

Many areas across Australia are currently experiencing hazardous
levels of air pollution

Dear FSU Members,

As you are no doubt aware, many areas across Australia are experiencing hazardous levels of air pollution due to bushfires.

Bushfire smoke is a serious health hazard. People with pre-existing health and respiratory conditions, heart and lung conditions, and older people, are especially vulnerable to the effects of bushfire smoke.

Health professionals advise avoiding smoke exposure if possible – and if you are feeling any unusual symptoms, shortness of breath, or do not feel well, you should speak to a health care professional or go to a hospital.

Employers are reminded they have a legal duty to provide a safe working environment to their employees. If you are feeling unwell in your workplace due to poor air quality you should inform your Manager or People Leader immediately and complete an incident report form.
