10 days paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave in the National Employment Standard

There is a crisis in Australia.

Every week a woman is killed by an intimate partner or family member.  Already in 2017, 45 women have been killed through family or domestic violence.  800,000 women and 1 in 20 men will experience violence at home this year.

To escape a violent relationship you have to take time off work.  Without paid leave, people subjected to violence simply don’t have time or resources to find a new, safe, place.

The government isn’t convinced – despite the fact that thousands of workers in the finance industry already have provisions for paid leave – some of our employers know it’s the right thing to do and have been prepared to include paid leave in enterprise agreements to demonstrate their willingness to be on the right side of history.

The federal government has refused to ensure Australian workers have access to paid domestic and family violence leave, despite evidence that it would save lives and cost business just five cents a day.

So this year, over the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence from 25th November to 10th December, our campaign to enshrine 10 days paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave in the National Employment Standard is escalating – and we need you to be part of it.

On Wednesday 29 November the FSU will be turning our social media platforms purple to demonstrate our support for the campaign and we’d like you to be a part of it.

To participate is easy, simply take a selfie holding the we won’t wait placard available here for download: http://bit.ly/We_Wont_wait_selfie_poster
Not comfortable with a selfie? Take pic where the predominant colour is purple and post to the FSU’s social media page with the hashtag #wewontwaitdv here: https://www.facebook.com/FinanceSectorUnion/
