Unfortunately Australia has voted not to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in our constitution.

I’d like to express the FSU’s deep appreciation to everyone who passionately advocated for the cause, invested their time, and took part in discussions leading up to the referendum.

While the specific proposal for a constitutional voice may not have been endorsed this time, our advocacy for justice, fairness, and inclusivity does not end here. We remain committed to championing the rights, recognition, and voices of First Nations Australians.

Our journey continues

The FSU First Nations Finance Workers Committee will continue to explore avenues and initiatives that further these objectives, and fight to ensure that our First Nations members are not left behind and have a platform for meaningful participation in our union.

To those feeling disappointed or disheartened, please remember that social change is often a journey with many steps, some forward and some back. Every effort you made, conversation you had, and passion you shared has planted seeds that will continue to grow in various ways.

We encourage all members to remain active, stay informed, and continue the dialogue within their communities. Let’s focus on the strides we can make collectively, both within our union and in the broader community, to bring about positive change and understanding.
