“Sometimes people find it surprising that we have full-time jobs.”
FSU Delegate and disability advocate Dave Luckman has, unfortunately, heard it all.
He recently shared some of the common misconceptions about people living and working with a disability to raise awareness for this month’s International Day of People with a Disability (3 December).
“People think we are unable to do anything and we’re not competent,” Dave shared.
“They find it surprising that we have full-time jobs or can still go to work. I think the ability to undertake a high performing role while having a disability seems like a mountain that’s too high to climb.”
But these misconceptions can be dispelled, and there are many things workplaces can do to help break down barriers and support those with a disability thrive at work.
Dave said it all boils down to having conversations.
“It would be great for our employers and managers to really get to know us as individuals and what our specific needs are,” Dave said.
“Some of the things that would help people with disabilities are providing flexible working arrangements like working from home, undertaking ergonomic assessments, or providing time for them to consult with medical professionals or undertake treatment.
“It also helps to establish a clear understanding of what’s required in the role or what we would need to help us succeed in the workplace.”
His own personal experiences with living and working with a disability means Dave is uniquely placed to support others in a similar position.
It was what initially drove him to put his hand up to be part of the FSU Disability Committee.
“One of the committee’s key aims is to create a world of advocacy and information for those who don’t understand what their options are,” he said.
“We want to help those with a disability know what their rights are, what resources they can access and how they can get help – the FSU and FSU representatives are here to help so we can put our best foot forward in our industry.
“Anyone can jump on board with our Disability Committee, anyone can have a say and anyone can take part!
“Don’t forget many workplaces may also have internal supports for staff, you only have to ask.”
