The Finance Sector Union (FSU) has been notified that the Commonwealth Bank is shutting down more branches and deserting its customers in some of the most densely populated parts of Australia.
CBA branches at Rundle Mall in Adelaide, Coolangatta on the Gold Coast and Coogee in Sydney will be shut down as the bank once again puts profits before people and forces customers wishing to transact business at a bank branch to travel even further.
“What a kick in the guts for our members working at these branches at the start of the year,” said FSU National Secretary Julia Angrisano.
Ms Angrisano said CBA’s decision to close the Rundle Mall branch in Adelaide showed how little it values SA customers.
“There are 800,000 people passing through Rundle Mall every week and many will be CBA customers however the bank has decided to shut the branch with the loss of 13 jobs.
“This is the busiest shopping precinct in Adelaide but CBA customers and businesses are being told to find a branch elsewhere in the city if they need to visit a bank branch.”
Coogee is in the middle of Sydney’s heavily populated Eastern Suburbs, with many older customers but that branch is going as well with the loss of four staff.
And with tourists from all over Australia travelling to the Gold Coast it is important for all of the banks to maintain a physical presence to assist them. The CBA’s decision to close the Coolangatta branch makes it that much harder for its customers to manage their finances.
Five CBA staff members will lose their jobs in Coolangatta.
“These closures should not be happening and it only demonstrates CBA’s continual desertion of its ‘bricks and mortar’ branch network.”
“The CBA claims branches are shutting because of a reduction in over the counter transactions but the reality is they are forcing staff to move customers to digital banking by directing them to a computer terminal in the branch.”
