2025 has been a year of immense change for finance workers. Technology can (and so often does) improve our lives. When it comes to our jobs, it can open new opportunities for us to think more deeply, creatively and critically.
Unfortunately, this year many employers have embraced new technologies in all the wrong ways – with profits being the key driver. This has resulted in too many job cuts and too many workers feeling insecure about their future employment.
Unions are not here to stop progress. We are here to ensure workers come first and are protected.
Whether it’s getting employers to agree to extend consultation periods so we are heard (as we did many times this year), or delaying any redundancies until after Christmas so families are not left in limbo at this crucial time (as we did at Westpac and CBA), the FSU will always pursue all avenues available to us to ensure members are provided the dignity we deserve.
To help achieve this, we recently launched our second AI report. It includes important insights from FSU members on attitudes towards AI. It also includes our ‘digital just transition’ – an evidence-based framework that sets the standard for how employers must ethically approach AI. These important bodies of work are already guiding our discussions with employers and governments, including key politicians in Canberra.
We continue to win for workers
Our work assisting members in 2025 has been far reaching, and we’ve had some significant wins.
- Importantly, we negotiated 17 new Enterprise Agreements, covering nearly 58,000 finance workers. That’s 58,000 people who’ve had a pay rise and seen improvements to their conditions and entitlements.
- Work from home continues to be a major priority. Our landmark win in the Fair Work Commission sets an exciting precedent for our sector, and means employers can’t rely on buzz words like ‘collaboration’ and ‘connection’ to outright refuse a flexible work arrangement request. You can be sure there will be more wins in this space next year.
- And our advocacy on behalf of individual members saw hundreds of thousands of dollars returned to members’ pockets. Whether it was recovering unpaid wages or improving redundancy payouts, our team of experts assisted members every day to secure what was rightfully theirs.
Your membership makes a difference for everyone
Workers will always achieve more when we work together. Recent government figures showing pay rises in private sector enterprise agreements (EA) hitting a 16-year high of 4.3% also coincided with a record number of Australians being protected by EAs.
The fact that real wages have continued rising this year is no happy accident – it’s the result of changed policy settings advocated by our union movement, paired with the hard work of union members like you standing up and demanding your fair share.
So thank you for your continued support in keeping our union strong. We are a mammoth workforce and when we stand together, we are hard to ignore.
We hope all FSU members have a safe and festive season. See you in 2026!
