We were proud to represent finance workers at this month’s Labor Conference in Victoria, speaking on key issues affecting finance workers.
We spoke about the FSU’s work in leading the way on reproductive health care leave, an essential entitlement to ensure all women can participate in the workforce fully and with dignity.
As you know, the FSU first won menopause and menstrual leave in an Enterprise Agreement three years ago and now thousands of our members and workers everywhere can access these critical entitlements. But we still have a long way to go for everyone to be able to access reproductive health care leave.
This is vital because women are often forced to leave the workforce early to manage menopause and menstruation symptoms, and burn through their sick leave managing these normal bodily functions.
The finance sector has a gender pay gap of 26.1% and women still retire with half of the superannuation of men. Fighting for reproductive health care leave is just one small step we must all take to keep fighting for real gender equity.
We also highlighted AI as one of the most serious issues facing FSU members.
It impacts almost every aspect of our working lives – from rostering and scheduling of our shifts, to how our work is assessed and managed, to disciplinary action and losing our jobs. AI also underpins so much of the surveillance and monitoring workers are subject to.
And all of this is happening with almost no regulation. Neither the Fair Work Act nor the Privacy Act deal with AI.
The FSU strongly encourages the Industrial Affairs Policy Committee to consider the increasing role of AI and worker surveillance, and ensure there is fair regulation to protect workers in its use.
