Have your say on banking standards, safeguards and protections

The Australian Banking Association (ABA) has commissioned a review of the Banking Code of Practice, and we want to hear from members to help shape the FSU’s submission.

The Banking Code of Practice sets out standards that banks commit to meeting when dealing with customers. It provides important safeguards and protections, including commitments that go beyond banks’ legal obligations.

As finance workers, you see firsthand how banking policies and practices affect customers and communities. Your experiences and insights will help identify what needs to change to ensure banks are accountable and customers receive fair treatment.

The review will consider several key areas, including:

  • Industry standards and consumer protections.
  • How well the Code supports customers, including people experiencing vulnerability, small businesses, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander customers, and those living in remote, rural, and regional communities.
  • Whether the Branch Closure Protocol provides appropriate protections for customers and communities.
  • How effectively banks support customers experiencing financial difficulty or hardship.
  • Whether the Banking Code Compliance Committee has the powers needed to monitor compliance and take appropriate action.

You can read the Banking Code of Practice here.
