This has been a significant month for working women.
We marked the launch of our Sexual Harassment Report at a special International Women’s Day event, and damning gender pay gap results were released for the very first time.
FSU National Secretary Julia Angrisano and Sex Discrimination Commissioner Dr Anna Cody launched our landmark report into sexual harassment in the finance sector, titled ‘One too many’. If you couldn’t make it to the event, you can watch a recording here.
Our report makes it clear that finance workers have not been provided with effective education about the sort of behaviour that constitutes sexual harassment, and when harassment occurs they have little faith in corporate reporting systems.
Something needs to change. We need to hold our employers accountable for taking the steps required by law to eliminate sexual harassment because even one case is one too many. You can read our full report here.
We know gender inequality and power imbalances underline the cultural norms that allow sexual harassment to occur and go unchallenged. Gender pay gap data released by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) for the very first time this month further highlights this imbalance in the finance industry.
For the finance industry’s biggest employers, the results are damning indeed.
You can view a breakdown of the gender pay gap for employers in the finance industry or find your employer’s median gender pay gap on the WGEA website here.
This is a persistent problem that finance employers have refused to address for years, choosing instead to redistribute billions of dollars in profits each year anywhere else except into the pockets of women in their workforce.
There are many things we can do in our workplaces to help make it more equitable and we’re committed to removing the barriers that prevent women from fully and equally participating in the workplace through our smashing the gender pay gap campaign. Find out more here.
