What constitutes ‘reasonable travel distance’ and can I refuse to travel a certain distance for work?
Some FSU members who work in branches have recently been pressured to travel…
It’s a horrible feeling to be told by your manager that they’ve got concerns about your performance. Understandably, any suggestion that you are not meeting the role expectations can cause significant stress and anxiety.
It’s important to remember, however, that any process to review your performance can actually be used to your advantage, and does not mean you are in trouble or at risk of having your employment terminated.
Many FSU members who have undergone a performance review have emerged in a stronger position, as they have used the experience as an opportunity to find out what more they can do to succeed in their job – and importantly, what their employer can do to help them succeed.
Contact the FSU to get individual advice and support. We’ll guide you through what you need to do to ensure any review process is fair and appropriate.
You should also review any material that your employer has sent to you about your performance. Make sure it’s correct and only the relevant points are included in the material.
Next, determine what you need to do to be successful in your role. This may include suggesting additional training, support, and time to get to the required level.
Also be prepared to ask for more support from your manager throughout the process. Remember, the goal is to help you succeed in your job, and if you’re not getting the support you need from your employer, then they also have a responsibility to make that happen.
Finally, when it comes to meetings with your manager to discuss your performance, you should ask a support person to attend with you. This can either be your FSU delegate or a trusted friend or colleague. Even if they don’t say anything during the meeting, it’s still a good idea to have someone else present who can back you up and listen to what is being discussed.
