FSU members at Teachers Mutual Bank secured a major win recently, ensuring their privacy was maintained and protected.
TMB management recently instructed employees to install tracking devices in all company cars.
Many TMB employees use their work cars for business and personal purposes. Because the tracking devices could not be turned off, this would have meant TMB tracking workers at all times.
Tracking workers’ movements, particularly outside work hours, is a gross intrusion of our privacy, and breaches NSW workplace surveillance laws.
The FSU told TMB that these tracking devices were not legal and that the rollout must be stopped.
Shortly after, TMB stopped the rollout of the tracking devices, and those that had already been installed could be disconnected.
Management also committed to work with FSU members moving forward.
This is why consultation matters. Under the TMB Enterprise Agreement, management is required to consult with employees on proposed changes that affect them. Genuine consultation could have avoided this.
Congratulations to FSU members on securing this important win! It was only the strong intervention of our union that stopped this.
