Winning for 60,000 finance workers in 2024

As 2024 draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to look back at what we’ve accomplished in the year that was – and we’re proud to say we’ve hit some extraordinary goals this year.

We know the cost-of-living strain continues, but there are positive signs we’re starting to turn the ship around. In particular, the government’s new ‘Secure Jobs, Better Pay’ Bill is working as intended: to tip the balance back in workers’ favour when it comes to collective bargaining.

How are these laws making a difference in the finance sector?

By giving us agency to push even harder for what you deserve. Not only have these laws forced many employers back to the bargaining table, but many of our new enterprise agreements negotiated this year achieved a 5% pay rise in the first year alone, with many more securing a 4% increase.

In fact, this year’s private sector wage growth was the highest since 2012. And when you consider our 2024 agreements cover some 60,000 finance workers, we can confidently say our work has contributed to this turnaround.

Of course, pay increases are just part of the story. Whether it’s industry-leading AI protections or winning the right to disconnect, we’ve won significant improvements for our members across the board.

In fact, in our agreements negotiated this year:

  • 60% include sick/personal leave provisions more generous than the National Employment Standard (NES)
  • 94% provide for super on paid parental leave
  • 89% provide for paid family and domestic violence leave above the NES
  • 20% provide for paid menopause or menstrual leave.

Remember, laws by themselves are not enough, just as union leaders alone cannot convince employers to hand over more than the bare minimum without pressure from the collective backing of rank-and-file members.

So thank you for everything you have done to make our union stronger in 2024. By being a union member, you are part of the solution, and you do make a difference to our work every day.

We hope all FSU members have a safe and enjoyable festive season and see you in 2025!
