Workers are pushing back on ANZ’s reckless plan to slash 3500 jobs, after gathering in Melbourne earlier this month to send CEO Nuno Matos a message: no matter how big a company or how massive its profits, workers have rights and protections, and employers have legal obligations they must follow.
From accidentally informing staff about their redundancies via automated emails, to employees first hearing about the proposed cuts on the news or from loved ones – ANZ’s behaviour over recent months has been callous and chaotic.
As one ANZ member recently said, “I have never in my life experienced such job insecurity and gaslighting as I have since this new CEO has taken hold. I can’t even begin to speak to the incredibly devastated work culture that now lingers.”
What we do know is that these cuts are all in the name of boosting ANZ’s profits by a further $800 million – all while management continues dishing out millions more in bonuses to top executives.
We may not all work for ANZ, but these reckless cuts will affect all of us in one way or another. If ANZ can get away with treating workers with such contempt and disregard for our industrial rights and due process, other employers will do the same.
Help spread the word on social media about ANZ’s reckless behaviour and let ANZ know: finance workers deserve better!
