This month, the FSU attended the Myanmar People’s Summit in Melbourne where we heard from Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão on the Myanmar Coup Crisis.
The event saw representatives of civil society in Australia, the Australian Myanmar diaspora, and government representatives come together to express their unified support for a genuine democratic government in Myanmar.
Since the violent military coup on February 1 2021, Myanmar people have staunchly rejected military rule and have mobilised an effective alternative in the form of the civilian National Unity Government (NUG), which continues to consolidate its rightful claim to leadership.
Our attendance at the Summit adds support to the efforts of workers in Myanmar in their fight to restore democracy.
Our union continues to call for targeted sanctions against Myanmar’s state-owned banks, which fund procurement of weapons for the ruling junta. You can read more here.
The summit was convened by civil society, and took place at the United Workers Union offices in Melbourne. It also marked the launch of the Myanmar People’s Summit Statement 2024, further solidifying our collective commitment to civilian rule and democracy in Myanmar.
