In the lead up to the end of the year, we wanted to remind you about your entitlements regarding taking annual leave over the Christmas and New Year period.
As outlined in our Westpac Enterprise Agreement, management can only require you to take annual leave if it is a reasonable request. This includes if you have ‘excessive’ leave accrual (up to three weeks is not excessive), or if you haven’t taken at least 10 days of leave in a row in the past year. If your leave balance is not excessive, then management cannot require you to prematurely schedule your annual leave in 2025.
Furthermore, management must provide at least four weeks’ notice of any reasonable request to take leave over the upcoming Christmas and New Year period.
Ideally, annual leave should be taken at a time that is mutually agreed by yourself and your employer, and management should work collaboratively with you to bring any excessive leave balance down.
As always, if you require support or assistance from our union, please contact our Member Rights Centre on 1300 366 378 – Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
