‘A shameful act’: CBA replacing jobs with AI and offshoring to India
This is our worst fears come true – and it’s happening now. Finance…
“My life would’ve been turned upside down if I’d been made redundant.”
That was the reality for FSU member Mackenzi De Piazza when she was told by her employer, CBA, that she and four of her colleagues were being made redundant, due to the bank centralising their roles to Sydney.

All five of them had been working primarily from home, but occasionally in back-of-house areas in old branches. Eventually, CBA closed these branches. Despite there being a business banking location with multiple desks in the ACT, Mackenzi and her colleagues were told there was no space for them and would therefore be made redundant.
Mackenzi, who is the primary carer for her mother and brother, had already renovated her garage to be her home office space, assuming her work from home situation would continue as it had done for many years.
“Working from home nine out of 10 days a fortnight means I can keep an eye on my brother, who is mentally ill, and help care for my mother, who is physically disabled,” Mackenzi said.
“If I’d had to find a new job I likely wouldn’t have that flexibility, meaning I’d have to buy a second car and get a carer part-time.”
“So I contacted the FSU within 48 hours of being advised of this potential redundancy.
“I was right to do so, because my colleagues and I received support, both policy wise and emotionally, faster than you could blink an eye.
“Knowing we had the union on our side gave us the confidence to push back for a different outcome.”
The FSU assisted Mackenzi and her colleagues to identify numerous solutions to continue their current working arrangements without having to resort to the extreme step of redundancy.
After drawing out the consultation process, the bank ultimately reversed its decision and abandoned its planned redundancies.
While Mackenzi was relieved to learn her job was safe, she said it was frustrating that she and her colleagues had to go to such lengths to protect themselves.
“It’s disappointing to know I could so easily be let go after 14 years of service and winning multiple awards for doing an exceptional job.
“It made me feel like I’m just a number.”
However, Mackenzi offered this advice to anyone experiencing a similar situation:
“You have rights, and the bank is ‘banking’ on you having little to no knowledge of your rights.
“Our union is there to help us, so make sure you reach out for help when you need it.
“It’s David versus Goliath and the union is your sling.”
