Easter public holidays: Know your rights

Easter public holidays are around the corner on Friday 29 March and Monday 1 April. It’s important you know your rights when it comes to working on a public holiday.

If you would normally work on either of those days, you are entitled to a paid day off.

But your employer can request that you work on a public holiday, only if that request is reasonable.

You have a right to refuse your employer’s request if the request is not reasonable, or if your refusal is reasonable (due to your personal circumstances for example).

This means that your employer is not allowed to roster you to work on a public holiday without asking you first and giving you a genuine opportunity to consider the request. Then, if you think your refusal is reasonable due to your personal circumstances, you can say no to working that day.

If you’ve been rostered or directed work on a public holiday during Easter without first being requested to work, contact the FSU immediately by replying to this email or calling our Member Rights Centre on 1300 366 378.
