AustralianSuper has confirmed that its standard background screening process will be limited to information that is in line with legislative requirements – specifically, information on employees’ criminal history record, global sanctions, entitlements to work, and bankruptcy.
This confirmation follows our union raising concerns that AustralianSuper was seeking to broaden the scope of its background checks to include unnecessary and intrusive information, such as social media activity, health information, mentions in online or print media, and other people’s opinions about your performance and character.
AustralianSuper claims they are unable to tailor their consent form to remove reference to these additional checks. Instead, management agreed to clarify in writing that their background checks will only be limited to those they are legally required to conduct. You can view management’s statement here.
Maintaining your privacy and personal information is vital, so we are pleased to have secured this clarification from AustralianSuper.
If you have any concerns about this issue or would like advice before signing AustralianSuper’s background screening consent request, FSU members can contact our union at [email protected].
