WIN! Westpac confirms overtime for retail staff

Following our contravention inspection at a Westpac branch, management has now confirmed that they will honour overtime entitlements for retail staff who perform ‘essential’ duties outside rostered hours

These duties include serving customers, balancing, and attending team huddles (including before a shift).

Members have previously reported they were being denied overtime, despite performing these duties outside rostered hours, simply because they weren’t given explicit approval by regional managers.

Not long after our inspection, however, Westpac issued a communication to all retail staff that included the following:

“…any work you are required or agree to undertake, including work outside of your rostered hours, must be captured in your Time Card. You play a crucial role in ensuring required activities are accurately captured so that you are paid correctly.”

Congratulations to all FSU members who helped secure this win!

As one member told us, “Our manager now asks us to load our correct time and asks us to leave on time. Great job!”

Sometimes working outside rostered hours is unavoidable, but no one should have to work for free. After all, an hour of overtime here and there can add up to hundreds of dollars, if not more.

What happens next?

We’ll continue to monitor the situation – but as this win demonstrates, informing our union that there’s a problem is the first step to getting an outcome.

If you work in a branch and continue to have issues with your overtime entitlement, let us know immediately so we can help you fix it.
