Employees may have rights and entitlements when the time comes to resign from our job – but that doesn’t guarantee our employer will hand them over without first attempting to pull the wool over our eyes.
That’s what happened to an FSU member who worked for one of the big four banks, when she tendered her resignation.
After taking a job at another bank, the member submitted her required four weeks’ notice. When she later looked at her payslip, however, it showed she had only been paid to the end of that week, instead of the full four weeks.
Suspecting this wasn’t right, she contacted the FSU.
“I was advised by the FSU that I should have received the full notice period pay. They helped me draft a letter to my manager.”
Fortunately, there was no room for the bank to push back. Ultimately, our member received over $7000 in income, in addition to about $900 in superannuation payments.
“The ordeal made me realise how important it is to understand your rights and entitlements, including when you have a change or movement in your career path,” the member said.
“I strongly recommend that all banking colleagues join our union. It’s not only good to be covered, but it also helps when you need support with something outside your own knowledge.”
Remember, if something doesn’t seem right about your pay slip, it’s always best to check – sometimes it can really pay off! Members can contact the FSU for assistance on 1300 366 378.
