NAB backs down: no forced redundancies before Christmas

After sustained pressure from union members, NAB CEO Andrew Irvine has agreed that no worker will be forced out of their job before Christmas. All involuntary redundancies will be deferred until 27 January 2027, and the consultation period has been extended to Wednesday 11 November.

This is a significant improvement for NAB workers and shows what we can achieve when we stand together through our union.

How we got here

Last week we met with Andrew Irvine directly and put to him the stories and concerns that thousands of NAB workers shared through our mass member meetings and open letter.

We made two clear demands: no forced redundancies before Christmas, and an extension of the consultation period.

Since then, the FSU has held further rounds of intensive discussions with NAB management on the issues you raised.

What we have secured

  • By 6 November, NAB will provide a detailed analysis of the proposed changes, including their impact on workloads and staffing levels.
  • Consultation and the Expression of Interest (EOI) process will stay open until Wednesday 11 November 2026. If you’ve already submitted an EOI, you can revise it once you’ve seen the additional information.
  • No one will be made involuntarily redundant before Christmas. All involuntary exits are deferred until 27 January 2027.
  • Workers who have asked for and been granted voluntary redundancy can still leave on 2 December.
  • Workers made involuntarily redundant will be granted gardening leave from 16 December 2026 to 27 January 2027. This gives them time to focus on retraining and redeployment.
  • For exits in late January, the January 2027 salary increase will be included when calculating final redundancy payments.
  • The FSU and NAB will meet regularly to address work health and safety (WHS) concerns and the impact of further job cuts. That includes the additional 1,000 roles NAB has earmarked for reduction in 2027.

These commitments give workers and their families more certainty over Christmas. They also give everyone more time to take part in genuine consultation and better opportunities to explore alternatives to redundancy. None of this would have happened without NAB workers standing together.

Join a report-back session

We’re holding four online sessions this Thursday. We’ll explain what has been secured, answer your questions, hear your feedback and talk through next steps.

Please forward this email to your colleagues and encourage them to come along. The more workers who take part and share their experiences, the stronger our position will be.

Our fight is far from over

Getting NAB to back down on forced redundancies before Christmas is an important outcome. But NAB still plans to go ahead with thousands of job cuts in the new year. We remain deeply concerned about the impact on workers facing redundancy, and on those who will be left to manage the workload with fewer colleagues.

Our union will keep holding NAB to account. We’ll make sure consultation is genuine and keep fighting to protect jobs, conditions, and the health and safety of everyone at NAB.

We’re here to support you

We know this is still an anxious time for many NAB workers. If you have questions or concerns, or need support, contact your FSU Organiser or call us on 1300 366 378.

Andrew Irvine didn’t make these commitments out of goodwill. They were won because thousands of you stood together. We’ve made progress, but we’re not finished.

Together, we are making a difference.
