ANZ’s behaviour is disgraceful. Our union is taking action

It’s a distressing time right now for so many ANZ employees. Our union has members’ backs, and we are doing everything possible to hold ANZ management to account for their appalling behaviour regarding these devastating job cuts.

We have heard from countless members detailing the chaos that is occurring at ANZ. Management’s actions can only be described as callous, gutless, and devoid of empathy.

Most workers heard about these cuts initially through the media, social media, or from loved ones while on their way to work. One member told us that upon being summoned to a meeting, her team feared they were about to lose their jobs. Instead, they were told about the promotion of two senior executives.

That sort of tone-deaf behaviour beggars belief.

Our union is taking action to ensure ANZ employees are treated with the respect and dignity we deserve.

That includes a proper and genuine consultation process – not the shoddy attempts to avoid accountability we have witnessed so far.

Yesterday, we met with ANZ. The bank has committed to providing affected employees with paid time for consultation. We also now know that approximately 792 impacted workers in the retail division will be provided further information on their employment today.

Our union is still wholly unsatisfied with ANZ’s inability to identify where all these job cuts will occur. The bank’s secrecy and complete lack of information so far is a clear breach of our Enterprise Agreement.

Therefore, as per our dispute with ANZ, we have given management until COB today (Friday) to provide clarity. If they fail to do so, we will escalate our dispute to the Fair Work Commission.

Political action

The FSU is also pursuing all political avenues, including engaging the Federal Treasurer and Financial Services Minister, to demand an explanation from ANZ.

You can read our letter to Treasurer Jim Chalmers requesting an urgent meeting here.

I also encourage you to reach out to your local MP and share your story. It’s encouraging to have the support of politicians –ex-ANZ worker Klasey Hirst MP delivered this powerful statement in parliament yesterday in support of ANZ workers.

Prioritising your mental health

Our union is also deeply concerned about the psychosocial impact this announcement (and ANZ’s mismanagement) is having on our members.

ANZ has a legal obligation to manage the health and safety of all employees. Announcing 3500 cuts while staying silent on basic information has caused unnecessary fear and anxiety, which is detrimental to the wellbeing of every ANZ worker.

If you are suffering, we recommend lodging an incident report and letting us know by emailing[email protected] so we can engage with Safe Work Australia.

Your feedback

We strongly encourage you to complete our short feedback survey – it’s your opportunity to tell us (confidentially) your experience and how ANZ’s behaviour is affecting you. Any feedback you provide will be essential for our union holding ANZ to account.

Once again, our union is here to support you in any way we can. Remember, you do have rights and protections – members can contact our Member Rights Centre for individual support on 1300 366 378.

If you’re not yet a member, now is the time to join.
