Bendigo Bank’s CEO ‘hopes’ no jobs will be cut due to AI

You may have heard about Bendigo Bank’s plans to expand its partnership with Google Cloud. Among other things, this will see increased artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities within the Bank.

But what does this mean for workers?

Bendigo CEO Richard Fennell commented in the media that he “hopes” no staff at Bendigo Bank would lose jobs because of this partnership. He added that staff had to accept that “over time the skills and capabilities we require in different parts of the organisation will change”.

Simply “hoping” there will be no job cuts is not good enough. Our union has written to Mr Fennell, calling on him to make a firm commitment that there will be no forced redundancies and that staff will be supported throughout this digital transition.

Our latest AI survey shows that 70% of workers feel that AI is a threat to our job security (up from 60% in 2024). Meanwhile, Bendigo Bank’s five-year strategy, which contains alarming plans around offshoring and AI, does nothing to alleviate our concerns. Management has still failed to articulate how the bank will prioritise or invest in its people.

If you haven’t already, tell us anonymously what you think about the bank’s five-year plan and what you believe Bendigo needs to do to protect and support your jobs.

If Mr Fennell truly hopes that no staff will lose their jobs because of this announcement, then he can make that happen. We will keep you updated once we receive his response.
