People First Bank puts people last: branch closures and your rights

People First Bank has announced plans to close 18 branches across Australia by 4 April – a massive 20% of its entire branch network, which will affect almost 100 jobs.

Those branches set to close include 11 Heritage Bank branches (all in Queensland), and seven People’s Choice branches across Queensland, South Australia, Northern Territory and Victoria.

While we understand the bank intends to redeploy the 98 staff who will be impacted, we know these changes will have a real impact on people’s lives and will particularly affect regional communities. Members are understandably feeling anxious, especially given the staffing cuts made by the bank in recent months.

If you are affected by these changes, you have rights and the FSU is here to support and protect you.

The FSU will engage with People First Bank to ensure they deliver on their obligations regarding redeployment and entitlements to those affected employees.

In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to share your feedback and tell management exactly how these changes will affect you, reply to this email and we will collate responses to provide to management anonymously.

Time for government regulation

It beggars belief that a bank that has recently rebranded itself to be about putting ‘people first’ is now doing the exact opposite.

Unfortunately, the bank can make these decisions without considering the broader impact on communities because of the current lack of regulation.

We havewritten to Federal Financial Services Minister Stephen Jones again, urging the government to implement the recommendations of the banking report and finally start holding the banks to account. Now is the time for the government to act.
