More branch closures at People First Bank – FSU support

People First Bank has announced it will close an additional 15 branches across NSW, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia on 12 March, impacting over 70 staff.

This is on top of the 18 branches that were closed in April last year, bringing the total branch closures to 36 – a massive 40% reduction in the bank’s branch network in the last two years.

After these cuts, almost half the entire former Heritage branch network will have closed.

We understand this announcement is incredibly distressing for impacted members.

Management trying hard to be People ‘Last’ Bank

People First Bank claims that “supporting customers and communities is at the heart of everything we do”, yet the decision to close even more branches flies in the face of this.

After 12 March, some towns will have no bank, and for others they will have to travel up to 150km just to access their nearest People First Bank branch.

Meanwhile, the bank’s profits were up 7% last financial year – they can well afford to keep branches open.

Unfortunately, the bank can make these reckless decisions without considering the broader impact on communities because of the current lack of regulation.

We continue to call on the government to implement the recommendations of the banking report and finally start holding the banks to account.
