You may have seen Treasurer Jim Chalmers has today approved the proposal for ANZ to acquire full ownership of Suncorp Bank.
Thanks to unrelenting advocacy by the FSU, this acquisition comes with strict conditions that will protect our regional banks and vital finance jobs through this process.
Our voices were heard
This is a huge union win for us. We worked closely with ANZ, Suncorp and the government to strongly advocate for our affected members and ensure your voices were front and centre during this process.
So we’re pleased to see some important commitments made by the Treasurer, including:
- No regional ANZ or Suncorp Bank in Australia to be closed for three years.
- No changes to the number of Suncorp branches in Queensland for three years.
- No net job losses across Australia in ANZ and Suncorp Bank as a result of the acquisition for three years.
- Workers affected by the acquisition will be provided with specialist support to maximise opportunities for redeployment and external placement.
- Consultation with the FSU, community stakeholders and consumer advocates to minimise concerns.
- The creation of a Tech Hub in Brisbane which will provide 700 jobs for the next five years and another 450 jobs after five years.
These conditions mean regional communities will continue to have access to essential banking services and finance jobs will be saved. Proper engagement with the FSU and with finance workers will also ensure you will be respected and heard throughout this process and beyond.
Next steps
The Treasurer has taken the time to genuinely consider the impact this major acquisition will have on workers with these positive conditions, and we’ll now be holding ANZ accountable to ensure they are upheld.
The FSU will work with Suncorp Insurance and Suncorp Banking members to continue to improve your pay and conditions. If you would like to know more or want to get involved, please reply to this email.
