We’re calling for a health and safety investigation into ANZ cuts

We have written to all state-based workplace health and safety regulators across Australia, calling for an investigation into ANZ’s reckless actions regarding its 3500 job cuts.

Specifically, we argue that ANZ has not met its obligations to identify psychosocial hazards or implemented adequate control measures to eliminate or mitigate these risks.

The feedback you provided via our recent survey – including harrowing accounts of the health and safety impacts many staff have endured due to ANZ’s mismanagement of these job cuts – underpins our calls for the regulators to act.

According to our survey:

  • 81% of respondents feel nervous, anxious or on edge.
  • 63% of respondents report physical symptoms related to stress (including headaches, stomach upset, muscle tension).
  • 45% of respondents report experiencing family and relationship impacts.

Despite repeated efforts from our union to get ANZ to provide greater and more appropriate supports, CEO Nuno Matos has dismissed your concerns. He has refused to extend the redeployment of those impacted by the Retail restructure to ensure that no one was forced to leave just before Christmas.

Incredibly, Mr Matos told a recent House economics committee review that his decision to cut thousands of jobs was “very tough”, and that his “hope” was that ANZ could “continue to have a constructive relationship with the union”.

If Mr Matos wants a constructive relationship, then the first step is to act on our calls for support. So far, Mr Matos’s words have not matched his actions.

Matos to face AGM

The ANZ annual general meeting will occur on 18 December in Sydney. This is an important opportunity for us to put our concerns directly to the board and to investors.

If you have any questions or feedback for the board, or if you would like to join the FSU at the AGM, please let us know here.

Our union continues to explore every avenue available to ensure ANZ employees are offered the control and dignity we deserve during this difficult time. We have requested a meeting with the health and safety regulators – we will let you know when we have more information.
